Ep. 11 2018 - Melinda Benstead
In this episode of The Busy Mum Podcast I speak with Melinda (Min) Benstead about leaving the corporate world and quality family time and some things business.
Tell me a little about yourself
My name is Melinda, but I've always been called Min. No idea why! I am a wife to Matt and mum to two active boys, 9 and almost 7 years old. I come from a 15 year corporate career in Sales & Marketing Management. In 2016 after being pushed to the brink we made the decision for me to step away from the corporate life and I started my own business in Health + Wellbeing coaching. Through this I inspire women to first love themselves. I strongly believe that if we don't give to ourselves we won't be able to give to others. Something I've experienced myself numerous times. I help clients to build their own self-care took kit so that they are thriving.
I am also passionate about inspiring people back into the kitchen to prepare and understand the benefits of a diet rich in real food. You can find me running classes with Thea under the umbrella of The Kitchen Whizz, helping simplify food for clients, pantry makeovers or in my kitchen developing recipes.

What does your typical day look like?
Every day is different but I always start my day with a body boost which is like a head to toe massage with my chosen essential oil. I use this time to be kind to myself and will often run through what I need to get done that day. Once the usual household stuff is done, including a cooked breakfast for all I will go for a walk before I sit down at the my computer. Walking and being outdoors is a great time for me to be present and grounded! More often than not my day ends with a hot Epsom salt bath.
The best advice you have received
Gosh, hard to pinpoint one but I think that with so many people in the health and wellbeing space the quote "comparison is the thief of all joy" is fitting. It is important to me that I stay in my own lane and remain focused on my work, not being bogged down by what others do. Have you heard Carren Smith talk about My Business, Your Business, Universal Business. I love this and I use it regularly, not just for me, but in life lessons for the boys as well.
What books are you currently reading OR Netflix / Stan shows
I read a lot of health and wellbeing books and this year I have switched my night reading to more fiction so that I can turn my brain off. I will read anything, always have! I rarely leave home without my kindle! I'm not a fan of the TV but did devour The Crown series late last year and early this year! I think my husband loved that I actually sat on the couch and watched something with him.
If you cook, what recipes can you share / meal prep tips
I love to cook, its a way I show my love for others. My go to is a slow cooked lamb shoulder. Usually I will do that on a Sunday when we are out the door by 8am for junior footy and then that means I have leftover lamb for my breakfast for most of the week. I also try and roughly plan out our main meals which makes shopping more cost effective (I do the majority of my fruit and vegie shopping at our local farmers markets). I will also make some time over the weekend / mid week to batch prepare some food for the week ahead which usually includes some baking for the kids lunches and our snacks, soups for the freezer and roasted vegies which I can easily make into a salad for our lunches.
What 1 area of your life would you like to improve
Gosh, I am pretty content to be honest! Id love to have the funds to take the kids out of school for a year and travel. I'd love to curb my nut butter addiction. I'm forever grateful that we have made the change in the work that I do which allows me to be an active part of my family life and that drives me each and every day to keep working on my businesses so that they are a success.
Whats the one thing you do each day (like a hack) that makes your life run smoother?
I find some time for myself each and every day. One of the main reasons I start my day with a body boost - it's a gift to me!
What website have you signed up to that you actually find value in receiving their emails?
I always make the time to read emails from Changing Habits, Cassie Mendonza-Jones, Twenty8 and The Natural Nutritionist.
What’s one piece of advice you would give your pre baby self
Don't' sweat the small stuff. I would also make the most of being able to be selfish with my time!
What’s the most useful / useless baby/kids item you have?
Colouring Pencils - always a great way to keep everyone occupied from when they were little to now.
