Ep. 29 2018 - Kristy Cox - Bean Stork Cafe

In this weeks episode of the busy mum podcast I speak with Kristy of Bean Stork Cafe, a brand new baby and kid friend cafe in Adelaide.

Tell me about yourself.

I moved to Adelaide 3 years ago and miss my hometown of the Gold Coast, Qld so badly. I’m easily deflated by mess and clutter but when organized and in control of mess - I’m a super woman! I am  the best reverse parker (a guy once left his card on my windscreen asking me on a date by viewing my parking) and I love taking photos of family, pets, other peoples families and so on.

My snap shot status: I am married to a pilot (cliché flight attendant pilot relationship) We have been married 3 years, have two daughters and a dog. I own a café (recently launched) part-time photographer and volunteer still born photographer (this is a recent addition too).

Describe for us, a day in the life of you.  Do you have any tips or life hacks?

My kids are good sleepers so we all wake around 7am, this will change when I have to go in and turn the coffee machine on for an 8am start. My kids are still in high chairs so I can contain them, they have their breakfast, get dressed and then their hair done back in the high chair. All the dishes I hide in the sink until I get home and we always leave for the day around 9am even if we have no where to go, just helps avoid tantrums and keeps the kids moving. Before I had a business we would go to the park, shops or a great coffee shop, library, swimming or ballet. Thankfully my 2 year old still transitions to her cot so if she falls asleep in the car in our window of being out and about (between 9-12) it’s no problem to put her in bed when we get home. Once we are home my 3yo needs occupying until the little one wakes. I went thorough this great phase of the Kmart tray, you get inspired by sensory play ideas through Instagram and pintrest – real winners that Miss 3 enjoys! 4-5 is cooking time (&bold and the beautiful) so the devices normally come out if my husband isn’t home to get us through until dinner is served at 5! 5-7pm is nuts but I know I’m not the only one dealing with all the craziness at this time! Once they are in bed 7-9 is washing, cleaning emailing and finally a relax.

What was the best advice you have received?

Be kind to yourself! The mumma gig as we all know is the hardest gig ever. People are happy to tell you, forget about the washing and chores but that dosen’t help at 7pm when the kids are in bed and to have 10 hours ahead of you cleaning the day that’s past. What does help, is not making too many rules for yourself… If I make the rule in my head dishes had to be done before I left the house at 9am, floors washed once a day, dog walked before 4pm – then I can guarantee I am setting my self up for failure. Being kind to myself allows me to make the rules lenient so I don’t fail but can achieve my goals. That makes me feel empowered.

What books are you currently reading or do you have a fave Netflix or Stan show?

A good dose of Harvey Spectre for an indulge (Suits) but other than that my research is all about cafes right know.

If you cook, what recipes can you share or meal prep tips?

Thermomix has changed my life. I do shop daily but when I’m at coles I just type in chicken thigh and hey presto all the thermo recipes come up and make my choice. I am no Thermoimix rep so this isn’t a plug but if you can afford one do it! And don’t forget to get more kids snacks!

What one area of your life would you like to improve?

Making my time with the girls more meaningful, I’m so busy with COPING, business and getting out the door, I do feel guilty I could be doing more for my girls and my husband. Recently miss 3 had an art exhibition at childcare. The topic was draw your face. The wall was lined with crayon drawn faces. Miss 3 had drawn a few shapes but nothing that resembled a face. It dawned on me that we had drawn shapes but never really put the elements together to make a face. This was my job and I had failed her. By the end of the night she could draw a face, what else hadn’t I taught her – arrrgghh!!

Do you have a daily hack to make your smooth?

Just carry lots of snacks!

Quick Questions

What website have you signed up to that you actually find value in receiving their emails

If the weather would email me that’s the only thing I would take interest in daily hahah CNN notifies me daily about Trump (boring), the Adelaide news only reports on how bad the Gold Coast is which dosen’t help my case in getting back there, Oh Motherly.com can be good when I have time to read it..!

What’s one piece of advice you would give your pre baby self

Stock up on nice knickers and bras even though your size will keep changing. Cheap knickers suck!

What’s the most useful / useless baby item you have?

Useless – an expensive amber necklace to help teething – Panadol is your only friend!

Okay, busy mum! Let’s get real, I mean really real real (is that to many reals). I would lurve to get this podcast out there (in podcast land) so that other business mums can learn from these conversations.  As you know, I am on iTunes and I would be forever grateful to get a review on iTunes and the more reviews I receive the more likely iTunes will reward this podcast with a better reach. Here is the iTunes link to help me with a review
