In todays episode of the busy mum podcast, I speak with Giovanna. Giovanna is a Mental Health expert and this interview goes deep on how to deal with your own mental health issues.

How do you define yourself and what you do in your business (if you have one) and your family life?

My name is Giovanna Mercuri. I used to be a kindergarten teacher, then became a music and drama specialist in primary school teaching and am now an accredited mental health social worker. I run my own counselling practice called ‘Start Fresh Counselling and Support Services’ and I drive around to people’s home and conduct counselling sessions. I help people with general life issues, mental health issues, parenting, school refusal and anything that comes my way. I offer practical solutions for each person in order to help them manage whatever their issue may be.

I am also a film maker, actor, writer, director, producer and music scorer. I make movies and TV shows about sensitive life issues.

I basically have combined all of my passions together. I have a supportive husband and 2 teenage daughters who are 14 and 16.

Describe for us, a day in the life of you. Do you have any tips or life hacks?

I usually wake up at 6am to have time to myself. I self care and enjoy a peaceful morning. Then I do editing and film work….and at about 8.30am I leave to do my counselling job. I then come home, spend time with the family, eat, go for family walks and then continue doing my music or film work.

On weekends I tend to do my filming shoots/acting.

What was the best advice you have received?

Always work hard and persevere to chase your dreams no matter how hard it is. Value the people around you.

Where do you go to get your entertainment? E.g. Netflix, Books, Podcasts, YouTube, and what are your fave’s.

Netflix/Stan. I love romantic comedies, and light entertainment. I don’t have specific favourite shows, but they have to be pretty good in order to hold my attention. I enjoy shows like Dexter, Breaking Bad and Game of thrones. I love movies like Titanic. I like a wide variety of shows.

What is your go to dinner!

I love my Italian old fashioned recipes that mum has taught me. Gnocchi, home made pizzas, stuffed eggplant. I try to hand these recipes down to my children, but being teenagers, they have other priorities

What one area of your life would you like to improve?

This is a hard question. Anything I want to improve, I change immediately. Eg….being bullied in a job I hate…I get a new job….want to be independent…I developed my own business….I get anxious, I self care.I am always developing and trying to improve.

What’s your greatest fear and how do you deal with it?

My greatest fear is dying unsatisfied. And this motivates me to work hard to reach goals.

Quick Questions

What website have you signed up to that you actually find value in receiving their emails

My social work website. Keeps me up to date with latest Professional developments.

What’s one piece of advice you would give your pre baby self

Believe in yourself and your abilities. People will tell you you’ll never make it, you’re too short, you’re not pretty enough, you’re not smart enough…..push it all aside and just go for it.

What’s the most useful / useless baby item you have?

I still have my baptism dress. It was useful as I handed it down to both my daughters

If you have anything else you would like to discuss, please let me know prior to the recording.

Okay, busy mum! Let’s get real, I mean really real real (is that to many reals). I would lurve to get this podcast out there (in podcast land) so that other business mums can learn from these conversations.  As you know, I am on iTunes and I would be forever grateful to get a review on iTunes and the more reviews I receive the more likely iTunes will reward this podcast with a better reach. Here is the iTunes link to help me with a review
