Ep. 17 2019 - Riley Hofer - Co-Founder of Tischler Designs
In todays episode of the busy mum podcast, I speak with Riley of Tischler Designs. Riley works with her husband and we talk in depth about how they make it work, about staffing and also cashflow. Let’s Dive In!
How do you define yourself and what you do in your business (if you have one) and your family life?
I would definitely say I’m the head honcho both at home and in our business. My husband and I met in 2011 in Ireland, he’s an Italian cabinet maker/furniture maker and I think from the moment we met we decided that I’ll be the brains and he’ll be the muscle. It’s been that way ever since. We run a cabinetry and furniture business call Tischler Designs in Melbourne’s Inner West. Marco runs the workshop and manufacturing and I handle the business front – from booking in client meetings, the manufacturing and install schedule, the accounts, social media, HR.. and so on. Nothing really gets passed me, I know a lot of people think I’m a control freak haha. We recently wrote an article for a local DIY blog regarding what is joinery and what is the difference between cabinetry, carpentry and joinery so If you want to check it out you can find the link on our Instagram page.
Describe for us, a day in the life of you.
Monday, Tuesday & Thursday I’m in the office so our son Liam (18 months) either spends the day at my mum’s house who lives very locally to us or with our nanny at our house. The morning is definitely frantic, breakfast, washing on, organizing that night’s dinner, packing our lunch for the day, washing out, wrangling the toddler etc. Heading in to the office I will ALWAYS grab a coffee for Marco and myself. The rest of the day is full of client meetings, staff meetings, account conferences, scheduling meetings as well as brainstorming what’s next. Afternoon’s I try and take our two cavalier King Charles Spaniels (Bonnie and Rudi) out for a walk at our local Dog Park and then 3 times a week I play social netball or go for a run. Exercise is absolutely my social time and my outlet. I love that for a game of netball I just escape the day’s stress – no wife, mum, business owner etc duties – just me 😊
Do you have any tips or life hacks?
Socialising & exercise – double it up baby; coffee in hand walking the dogs while catching up with a friend. Ultimate multi tasking haha. I think it’s important to find what relaxes you. I know when it all starts to build up and feel like life is getting bigger than me I need to slow right down – walking the dogs, going for a swim or a run really helps me take a few big deep breaths and focus of nothing but the task at hand. I usually don’t take my phone with me either so there’s no phone calls, facebook messages or emails to stress me out.
Cooking - Definitely my slow cooker haha – for anyone who knows me, they know that my slow cooker is my best friend. I will use it 4-5 days out of the week for everything from Bolognese
What was the best advice you have received?
Say YES – then work out how to deliver to the absolute best of your ability.
Where do you go to get your entertainment? E.g. Netflix, Books, Podcasts, YouTube, and what are your fave’s.
Netflix and Spotify for sure.
I get stuck into crime drama binge watching – think The Fall, The Killing, Homeland, The Bodyguard, The Sinner, Broadchurch, Marcella. Haha – I’m a serial binge watcher it’s my ultimate relaxer
Getting Google home for our lounge room was a game changer. I love walking in the door and ask Google to just start playing a fun playlist through Spotify. Running playlists are great to perk me up, Spotify also have some cracker playlists for ‘feeling good’. We also love changing up the music at home especially if we’re cooking something a little different on the menu – tacos and Spanish music, Homemade pizzas and Italian music, Cheese board and French music.
What is your go to dinner!
If I’m having a dinner party: Spinach and Ricotta Cannelloni with a yummy salad – it’s a crowd favourite for both vegetarians and meat eaters.
Comfort food: Chow Mein or Chicken and Mushroom Stroganoff
Roast: Chicken!! As easy as throwing a lemon in the cavity, sprinkle with dried thyme and putting it dry into the slow cooker 😊 Then I can just pick up a packet salad on the way home and bob’s your uncle a delicious dinner – even good to entertain!
What one area of your life would you like to improve?
I would LOVE to slow down more. I worry that my life is just passing me by and although I absolutely love what we do I don’t want to get older and forget the small stuff because I was so busy taking work phone calls, having arguments about cash flow and working until all hours in the morning. My favourite days are when we take a little trip together for the day, either to the country or the beach where it’s just so much simpler. Coffee, a walk in nature, a fresh lunch and lots and lots of cuddles.
What’s your greatest fear and how do you deal with it?
I guess my fear is similar to the above. Just rushing right on through my life with my boys.
What website have you signed up to that you actually find value in receiving their emails.
The Design Files – both for design inspo and what’s trending in the building and design industries at the moment.
What’s one piece of advice you would give your pre baby self
Try not to sweat the small stuff & be prepared and feel comfortable asking for help – no body needs help like a new first time mum and I really struggled asking/accepting help at the beginning.
What’s the most useful / useless baby item?
useful – high chair!! In particular the ikea one, so simple, so easy to clean (even can go in the dishwasher) to feed the child or just simply to keep then still while you clean up the bowl/wine glass you just broke in the kitchen….
useless – Fresh food feeder… you know the one… that hand held net that you put solid food (fruit) in and your baby can suck on it. I never understood this but I think that’s because my son just inhaled everything we gave him from 4 months old .

LOVE MY PODCAST?
Okay, busy mum! Let’s get real, I mean really real real (is that to many reals). I would lurve to get this podcast out there (in podcast land) so that other business mums can learn from these conversations. As you know, I am on iTunes and I would be forever grateful to get a review on iTunes and the more reviews I receive the more likely iTunes will reward this podcast with a better reach.
